Eric Clapton – The Return of a Legend and Timeless Blues
Few names in music history carry as much weight as Eric Clapton. The guitarist, songwriter, and singer, whose signature style has shaped modern blues and rock, is embarking on a European tour once again after his eightieth birthday. This includes a return to Prague – on May 4, 2026, he will perform at the O2 arena in Prague.
The tour announcement ended months of speculation about whether Clapton would hit the road for one more concert run. The answer is a resounding: yes! And for Czech fans, it is an exceptional opportunity to see a musician live who has profoundly influenced several generations and whose nickname Slowhand has become iconic.
From blues clubs to world stages
Clapton first made a significant impact on the development of rock music in the mid-1960s as a member of The Yardbirds. This was followed by a stint with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, where he definitively embraced his blues roots. Together with drummer Ginger Baker and bassist Jack Bruce, he then founded the trio Cream, one of the most influential bands of its time.
Short but prominent chapters followed with the projects Blind Faith and Derek and the Dominos. Since the 1970s, Clapton has pursued a solo career, during which he built the status of a global star and earned respect across genres.
Songs written by life
Clapton’s concerts are not just a showcase of guitar virtuosity. They are a personal testament intertwining joy, loss, and humility. Among the most powerful moments is the ballad Tears in Heaven, which he composed after the tragic death of his four-year-old son Conor in 1991. During his last Prague performance in 2022, it was played in an acoustic arrangement and was one of the most touching moments of the evening.
The O2 arena in Prague has a long-standing relationship with Clapton. He first performed here in 2006, and subsequently in 2022. His third return to the O2 arena naturally raises high expectations.
Journeyman: a return to the craft
The current tour is also accompanied by a significant new release. A remastered deluxe edition of the 1989 album Journeyman, considered one of the key milestones of his career, will be released in November. Clapton still refers to it today as one of his favorites.
The new edition will offer previously unreleased tracks from the original recording sessions and will also recall the stellar lineup of guests, which included George Harrison, Phil Collins, and Chaka Khan. Clapton himself says regarding the album’s title that the term “journeyman” – a craftsman – captures his lifelong approach to music: constant searching, improvement, and respect for tradition.
Blues as a lifelong attitude
The winner of 18 Grammy Awards and a three-time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has collaborated with numerous musical legends throughout his career, including B. B. King and J. J. Cale. Blues remains his anchor – a genre to which he always returns.
Eric Clapton’s concert at the O2 arena will not be just another item on the schedule. It will be a live encounter with music history – with an artist whose songs have stood the test of time and whose guitar can still tell powerful stories even after six decades.
